Acid baths, sandblasting, extreme heat, extended weathering and wear – we understand the challenges of extreme environments and we have solutions.
Not only does your masking solution have to withstand the same harsh environment as the parts you put it on, when it’s done protecting the underlying surface it should come off cleanly. It was a 3M lab assistant visiting an automaker that led to the invention of masking tape in 1925, and we have continued to work with our industrial customers to create products to meet their ever-changing needs. Our goal is to provide products you can count on to work well time after time masking in harsh conditions and helping to improve your productivity.
Tight manufacturing tolerances mean you get peace of mind knowing our tapes are the same from the beginning of the roll to the end and also from one roll to the next.
3M Extreme Masking Tapes are designed to stick well and stay on so you get good protection and sharp masking lines, then remove cleanly without residue that requires further attention.
With products that apply and remove easily and work well, your people can spend less time on each piece with fewer parts that require rework. You get more finished parts in the same time.
An extreme masking solution for chromic acid anodization.
Because each application is extreme for different reasons, the specific environment the tape needs to withstand determines which tape families are best suited to each application. For this purpose, extreme masking tapes are grouped into families by the backing or carrier that the adhesive is applied to.
Anodizing tapes need to resist the harsh chemistry of the acid bath, so these tapes come from the Polyester, Vinyl and Foil tape families.
Electroplating (and Electroless Plating) tapes need to withstand similarly harsh chemical solutions, and these tapes come from the Vinyl and Foil tape families.
Powder Coating tapes need to withstand the extreme heat of the bake cycle, so these tapes come from the Polyester and Polyimide tape families.
Powder coating uses electrical attraction to apply free-flowing dry powder to a part which then passes through an oven so the powder melts to form an even paint surface. Not only must the masking tape prevent powder from reaching masked areas, but both the carrier and the adhesive must withstand the high oven heat (usually 400°F/204°C or higher for 5-30 minutes) without transferring to the part so the tape removes cleanly afterward.
